P.O.S. - Meat Tape 2 (2009)

For starters i should admit that Meat Tape 2 is the follow-up to a compilation bearing the same name, which a punk rocker slash rapper P.O.S. put together with his tour DJ and a brilliant beat maker Turbo Nemesis. Both compilations are composed of various co-works which i guess didn't make it to albums. It is also worth noticing that Meat Tape 2 was shipped as a bonus with P.O.S.'s latest release Never Better (which i'd say is one of this year's best hip-hop albums).
Meat Tape is, if not anything else, filled with rich sounds from various genres. Genre-wize, the line-up is almost extreme. Not often do you get hip-hop, punk and indie rock and everything between on one artist's compilation. For example, a song from the post-punk band Tornavalanche is next to the Twin Cities most prominent hip-hop act Heiruspect. I imagine it to be quite rare to hear on the same record tracks from indie band The Velvet Teen and latino horrorcore rap crew Grayskul outside of P.O.S.'s world of evil genius. Meat tape is filled with P.O.S.'s co-works with such various artists like Mux Mool (electronic), Booka B (trip-hop), Themes (folk) and Solid Gold (new wave). Context is not really that important if you can handle Vache Va... Grr! by a speed metal band Beret next to a gentle indie track We Are Genius Millionaires by The Plastic Constellations, which come off as day and night.
Besides the soup of various genres this record also contains unreleased remixes by P.O.S. himself. For example, he has made his own version with his own verse of one of Grayskul's best known singles, Scarecrow. I myself enjoy the original a lot more, but it's an interesting experimentation nonetheless.
As far as my own taste is concerned, by far the best track on the compilation is the first one: Crispin Glover, which has so far been released on the 12" P.O.S. Is Ruining My Life, plus one of the False Hopes releases and a remake even made it to Never Better, if I'm not mistaking. What i didn't know before listening to this version of the song was that the soundbite heard on one of P.O.S.'s previous albums, "...come to MPR and sing along to the soviets" is cut from this track. I was suprised, since i had listened to it countless times and never before noticed it.
Another one of P.O.S's own creations is What's That Buzzing, which is quite short, but still enjoyable. It almost sounds like something left out of Ipecac Neat. I'm Coming Back with 2Mex and Die The Hunter receives the award for the best hook on this compilation:

The AC's broken, but the breeze feels right,
keep the windows open, keep the seatbelt tight,
no distress, i promise i'm coming back,
i promise i'm coming back, i promise i'm coming back around here...

Although the compilation has next to nothing to do with veganism when it comes to lyrics, graphic images of bodyparts are featured on both Meat Tape's cover art - perhaps reminding one that it doesn't matter weather organs come from humans or animals - meat is murder.
All in all, Meat Tape 2 is an awesome showcase of what good music from Minneapolis sounds like, when it's mashed together to break the concept of genres. I'd say it's a worthwhile listen, weather you enjoy hip-hop, rock music or better yet, both.
